Keith Petrie is the owner and also a good mechanic. Two other Japanese Beetle
mechanics, David and Mike, have also worked on my car, and they did good work too. When
two of my wheels were bent and the dealer claimed he didn't have any "take-offs"
to sell me, Mike used his connections to get me some. (In case you don't use the term
"take-offs," they are the original wheels on a new car, sold cheaply when the
buyer immediately upgrades to fancier wheels.)

Keith Petrie is the owner and also a good mechanic. Two other Japanese
Beetle mechanics, Jeff and Mike, have also worked on my car, and they
did good work too. When two of my wheels were bent and the dealer
claimed he didn't have any "take-offs" to sell me, Mike used his
connections to get me some. (In case you don't use the term

I have done business with Japanese Beetle for almost 20 years. They have
NEVER done an unnecessary repair and have refused to do unneeded repairs
suggested by other (unscrupulous) mechanics. For example, I encountered
a mechanic in a tire shop who insisted that I needed to replace the
struts on a 1983 Honda civic that I owned. I
checked this out with the folks at Japanese Beetle. They could have
agreed and done the work and I would have been none the wiser. Instead,
they looked at the car and told me that if it were their car they would
NOT replace the struts; the struts were fine. This and many other
positive experiences with them have kept me gladly coming back to do
business with them. They are excellent. It's too bad that they only work
on Hondas and Acuras.

I heard about this place from a co-worker with 150,000+ miles on her
Civic. The guys there really seem to know what they're doing and really
know Hondas. The main guys have been there for years and all they do all
day is work on Hondas.

Have been going to Japanese Beetle over 10 years with my '86 Honda
Civic. The folks there kinda reminded me of Bob and Ray because they
were able to tell me over the phone what was the matter with my car (too
fast idle) and fix it when I brought my car in after I had had it looked
at by 3 different garages with no luck. They are the best and are
the reason my next car will also be a Honda.

First Keith, now David and Mike have been servicing and repairing my
cars since 1986. That was the year that a local Honda dealer's service
shop told me that my '84 Accord was dying sporadically because my
muffler had been replaced (huh?!?). A friend pointed me to the Japanese
Beetle and Keith fixed my car. He got a good laugh from the
muffler story, and I got a mechanic I could trust. Mike and David (and
Mo, and the rest of the crew) have kept up the great work that Keith
began. They run an honest, knowledgeable shop, and unless I move out of
Northern California, I refuse to buy a car that they won't work on (they
only work on Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus). They treat their
customers well, and only rely on word of mouth for business - that's all
they need, as it turns out.

They are honest and friendly. It would have saved me money to tow the
car there long=distance, the last time it wouldn't start, but saving
that tow fee, I got jipped at a different store for over $700, after
which the car "broke down" again, and a friend showed how it could be
revived simply by starting it early in the morning. Honesty and
competence are criteria that beat "low price" any day!

I have been going to Japanese Beetle for over 15 years now. They have
always been completely honest every time. They do things on my cars (as
they say) as they would do to their own cars. When doing a Timing Belt
for example they replace the tensioner bearing as part of the Timing
Belt Kit they provide. I asked the local Honda Dealer about
this tensioner. They (the dealer ship) said to me they do not put it in
the kit price (they do stock them) and do recommend replacing it and do
call the customer in the middle of doing their Timing Belt job to
recommend it. But they (the dealership) keep the price of a Timing Belt
Kit down by leaving the tensioner out of the price. The price of
it is $56.00. Japanese Beetle when asked told me they do not want the
customers to have any hidden suprises, like a call back with a $56 item
that is usually bad in the first place. They said that they replace all
the items in question with Genuine Honda Parts and do everything to the
customers vehicles as they would their own vehicles. This is very kind
of them. I highly recommend their service to anyone who owns a Honda,
Acura, Toyota or a Lexus. They have been business since 1975 just doing
Japanese Cars. They must be doing something right! Their prices are
always compettive I have found. And they only use Factory Parts. Which
cost much more than aftermarket parts of
course. And they still keep the price lower than the dealer. I know that
Mike over there is factory trained. They have a very clean shop and
workmanship. Thanks. Dan

They are the best! I purchase all my family vehicles around their
recommendations and to what they work on and to what they specialize on.
(Honda, Acura, Toyota and Lexus vehicles only.) They are like family and
treat me the customer like family.

Scrupulously honest guys. I was recommended by a friend and have had
them do about a half dozen major things over the years and every one has
been a pleasurable experience. They are willing to put in the time to
show and explain the problem. They've brought me under the lift and let
me see for myself what's wrong, and have even sent me to the dealer to
make a non-warranty claim (which I prevailed on) instead of charging me
to do the work themselves. They aren't the cheapest (they are cheaper
than the dealer) but you absolutely get what you pay for.
They are even willing to spend time to chat with me on the phone to
troubleshoot problems I cause from my occasional track racing
experience. I'm pretty sure I'll never buy anything but a
Honda/Acura/Toyota/Lexus just because I'd have to find a different
mechanic.

Keith and Mike Petrie & others at the shop that I've dealt with have
each given me excellent service. I found this shop in 1989 by informally
surveying my co-workers that owned Hondas and finding that Japanese
Beetle had a stellar reputation. They've saved me money over the last 13
years by: - not doing work that didn't need to be done - not doing work
until it made sense from a wear or safety perspective - taking care of
small things "no charge" - by always being on time - by telling me how
to test and fix an electrical issue over the phone to save a trip to the
shop! - always taking the time to help regardless of whether this meant
bring the car to them for a repair. - installing after market parts that
I purchased - my civic has 180k miles and continues to run well!
